Pictograph is an independent editorial magazine devoted to long-form film journalism. We were founded on a simple, perhaps stubborn, belief: that cinema deserves to be written about with the same care it is made.
We publish reviews that take their time. Interviews that aren’t padded for the algorithm. Reported features that resist the easy take. Essays that earn their conclusions slowly. We try to be careful, generous, occasionally funny, and never lazy.
We write about world cinema, with a particular interest in the work coming out of Africa, the diaspora and the global South — but also in any work, anywhere, that is doing something we haven’t seen before. We do not chase virality. We do not write listicles. We are not optimised.

We are a small editorial team based across Johannesburg, Lagos and Cape Town, with contributors in London, New York, Lisbon, Mumbai and Paris. We are independent. We are funded by readers, sponsors and a small number of patient investors who share our convictions. We do not run sponsored content.
